James E. Murray was U.S. Senator from Montana from 1934 to 1960. Collection contains a photocopy of a letter (February 3, 1940) to Charles Stevens concerning state and national politics; and election certificates (1934-1955). [OVERSIZE MATERIALS: A1] This collection contains five election certificates (1934, 1937, 1943, 1949, 1955) signed by Montana governors for James E. Murray's election to the U.S. Senate; and one photocopy of a letter (February 3. 1940) written by Murray to Charles Stevens, editor of the Great Falls News, discussing state and national politics. James E. Murray was born May 3, 1876 in Toronto, Canada and graduated from New York University Law School in 1990. He came to Butte, Montana after receiving his law degree and was admitted to the bar in Montana in 1901. After serving as Silver Bow County Attorney from 1906-1908, he went into private practice where he gained wealth and prominence. He died in Butte, Montana on March 23, 1961 he was 84.
